Chinese embassy cautions nationals against marriages in Bangladesh

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu)- China has issued an advisory warning its citizens. The Chinese Embassy has issued a notice and given strict instructions to Chinese citizens against establishing relationships with or marrying women in Bangladesh.
According to the Global Times report, the embassy warned Chinese citizens not to fall prey to misleading dating content on short video platforms. The reminder issued late night said that Chinese citizens should strictly follow the law related to marriage abroad and avoid illegal matchmaking agents. The embassy said that the idea of buying a foreign wife should be rejected and one should think twice before getting married in Bangladesh.
A large number of Chinese youth go to poor South Asian countries in search of brides. A whole network works in these countries to provide brides to Chinese youth, which has a huge illegal business spread. In this, girls are trapped and married to Chinese citizens. Later these women are taken to China, where they are kept hostage. Many such cases have come to light in the past. These warnings have come amid growing concerns about bride trafficking in China. China is struggling with gender imbalance due to a long-term one-child policy and preference for sons. It is estimated that 30 million Chinese men are unable to find a life partner. This has led to a rise in the demand for foreign brides. A report by Bangladeshi media outlet Daily Star reports cases of women from Bangladesh being sold in China on the pretext of alleged marriage.
