New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Tension has risen again in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, barely a year after the violent unrest that shook the country. Panic spread across several parts of the city following a series of bomb blasts. As violent protests continued to intensify, the police issued orders to open fire on rioters on sight.

According to reports, multiple explosions were confirmed at several locations in Dhaka on Sunday. The situation has emerged at a time when the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is scheduled to deliver its verdict today against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Violence has already been reported across the country ahead of the judgment. Though no casualties have been reported so far from the blasts, the recurring explosions have created fear among residents. Security agencies have been placed on high alert throughout Bangladesh.

Serious Charges Against Former PM Sheikh Hasina

Sheikh Hasina faces allegations of committing crimes against humanity during last year’s violence and for allegedly ordering harsh action against protesting students. She has denied all accusations. The hearings in the ICT have concluded, and the verdict is expected today.

Before the judgment, Sheikh Hasina released an audio message urging people to intensify their movement. Meanwhile, supporters of her party, the Awami League, have announced a nationwide shutdown. In anticipation of unrest, security has been tightened across Bangladesh. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali has issued orders to open fire on violent elements on sight.
