Democrat Hakeem Jeffries slams Trump over Iran conflict, says US pushed into unnecessary war
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Donald Trump over the Iran conflict, accusing the administration of pushing the US into an unnecessary war while ignoring domestic economic issues.

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Political tensions in the United States have intensified amid rising military conflict with Iran and growing domestic economic concerns. Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has strongly criticized President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, accusing them of pushing the country into a “reckless and unnecessary war” against Iran.
During a media briefing, Jeffries said this is a challenging time for the United States. He alleged that the policies of Trump and the Republicans have negatively affected the quality of life of ordinary Americans, increasing financial pressure on households.
Jeffries claimed that Republican policies have led to rising costs in key areas such as healthcare, fuel, housing, childcare and food. Referring to a recently passed law, he said Republicans had implemented one of the largest cuts to Medicaid in US history through what he described as a “one big ugly bill.” He added that the move has resulted in closures of hospitals and community health centers, while increasing health insurance premiums for over 20 million working Americans.
Linking domestic issues with foreign policy, Jeffries also questioned US military actions in the Middle East. He said, “Republicans have dragged us into a reckless war against Iran. Billions of dollars are being spent on bombing in the Middle East, but nothing is being done to make life affordable for ordinary people.”
He also raised concerns over the administration’s strategy and preparedness, stating that the government has failed to clearly explain why billions are being spent daily on military operations in Iran. According to him, there is no clear plan, objective or exit strategy for the ongoing campaign.
Jeffries warned that the conflict could have wider regional consequences. Referring to the Strait of Hormuz, he said instability in the region could disrupt global energy supplies, as it is one of the most critical oil shipping routes in the world. He also alleged that the administration has not made adequate preparations for such risks or for the evacuation of American citizens in the region.
He further addressed ongoing discussions over the Department of Homeland Security budget, saying that Democrats are open to bipartisan agreements, but reforms must be meaningful and impactful. He accused Republicans of prioritizing what he termed a “toxic deportation machine” over funding key agencies such as FEMA, TSA and the Coast Guard.
Jeffries also made it clear that additional funding for the war is not acceptable at this stage. He said that if the administration seeks more funds, it would be inappropriate without clearly explaining the rationale behind its actions.
He concluded by accusing the Trump administration of focusing on voter suppression laws instead of addressing economic hardships faced by citizens, adding that rising costs of housing, healthcare and groceries appear to be ignored.
