Kampala (The Uttam Hindu): At least 63 people were killed in a horrific road accident in Uganda on Wednesday. The accident occurred on a highway leading to the city of Gulu, where two buses and two other vehicles collided. It is being reported as the East African country's worst road accident in recent years.

According to police, the accident occurred early this morning near the town of Kiryandongo when two bus drivers attempted to overtake oncoming vehicles. The vehicles collided head-on. Several people were seriously injured and were taken to nearby hospitals .

Road accidents are common in East African countries, including Uganda. Narrow roads and high speeds are often the cause of such incidents. Police say reckless driving and overspeeding are the main causes of most accidents.

Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakashita said the scene at the accident site was horrific. Many of the injured had broken limbs and were lying in the streets covered in blood. "This incident is a huge tragedy, and rescue teams are continuing to work," she said.
