Jalandhar (The Uttam Hindu): Canada is reportedly set to implement major changes to its visa regulations, a move that could force approximately seven lakh (700,000) Indians to leave the country once their current visas expire. The proposed law is expected to particularly affect Punjabi youth and other Indian nationals living in Canada on temporary or work permits.

A new bill introduced in the Canadian Parliament seeks to grant broader powers to immigration authorities enabling them to deport holders of temporary visas more swiftly and even cancel visas at any time. Once passed, these agencies would have the legal authority to enforce strict deportation measures.

Experts warn that this could have severe repercussions for Indian students and workers. Joginder Basi, a Canadian affairs expert, author and radio host, stated that the bill, currently under parliamentary discussion poses the greatest threat to students of Punjabi origin. A parliamentary vote on the proposal is expected in the coming weeks.

According to reports, the tightening of visa rules is being seen as a reflection of deteriorating diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Ottawa said that tensions have worsened due to controversial incidents and statements from the Trudeau government.

Statistics reveal that visa rejections for Indian students have already soared, with nearly 74% of applications reportedly denied in 2024. Analysts believe the proposed legislation will further strain educational and professional opportunities for Indians in Canada.
