Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has nominated his long-time political ally Sergio Gor as the next United States Ambassador to India, marking a significant diplomatic appointment during a sensitive phase in Indo-US relations.

Currently serving as the Director of the Presidential Personnel Office at the White House, the 38-year-old Gor is considered one of Trump’s most trusted aides. Announcing the nomination in a social media post on Friday, Trump wrote: “Sergio Gor is a good friend who has been with me for many years. I am pleased to announce that I am nominating him as the next US Ambassador to the Republic of India.”

Alongside his ambassadorial role, Gor will also act as a Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, further strengthening his portfolio.

Though Gor lacks deep experience in international diplomacy, he has participated in several foreign delegations and played a key role within the National Security Council, leading staff changes based on ideological alignments. Trump praised his leadership, highlighting how Gor and his team oversaw the appointment of nearly 4,000 federal officials across various departments and agencies in record time, with more than 95% of positions now filled.

However, Gor’s appointment has not been free from controversy. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, once referred to him as a “snake” after Gor reportedly blocked Musk’s potential consideration for NASA’s top position.

Amid evolving India-US strategic ties, this appointment is seen as a critical move by Trump, signaling the importance Washington places on its partnership with New Delhi.
