New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A massive fire has broken out in an 8-story building in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Police Force said in a press briefing on Thursday that 44 people died and 45 others were injured in the fire at Wang Fuk Court, a residential area in Taipo, Hong Kong. Police have arrested three people in connection with the case.

The agency quoted the Hong Kong Police Force as saying that three people have been arrested on suspicion. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said that after continuous efforts by firefighters, the fire at Wang Fuk Court has gradually been brought under control. Executive Lee said that about 279 people are still missing. 29 people are still hospitalized, seven of whom are in critical condition.

Li stressed that the government is fully supporting the rescue operation. He has directed departments and units to carry out a comprehensive effort, including extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped people, treating the injured, providing assistance and emotional support to families, and conducting a thorough investigation of the accident.

The fire department was alerted to the incident at approximately 2:51 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Due to the intensity of the fire, the department raised the alert to a 5-alarm fire at 6:22 p.m. local time. Rescue operations are still ongoing.

Wang Fuk Court has eight residential buildings, and the fire has engulfed seven. The Hong Kong Hospital Authority has activated its Major Incident Control Center. Additionally, many schools will be closed on Thursday.
