Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump announced a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland on Friday, September 18. According to Trump, this agreement will give the US "permanent control" over Greenland's security and other related needs. However, the agreement will not transfer sovereign control of Greenland to the US. Danish and Greenlandic officials have clarified that the agreement recognizes the territory's sovereignty and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.

Announcing the agreement on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would give the United States the permanent ability to ensure Greenland's security and take necessary steps to protect the American continent. He also stated that no adversary of the United States would be allowed to establish a military base, maintain a military presence, or invest in sensitive areas in Greenland without his written approval.

Trump said the US would immediately begin the process of developing a major military presence in Greenland. According to a US State Department official, the agreement ensures permanent access, military bases, and airspace rights for the US in Greenland, while also containing military presence and sensitive investments by US rivals like Russia and China.

Greenland is strategically important in the Arctic region. The US already has the Pitufik Space Base here. Trump has long described Greenland as crucial to US security and has expressed his desire to bring it under US control by 2025. The new agreement further strengthens security cooperation between the US and Denmark.

The governments of Denmark and Greenland have also welcomed the agreement. Both sides have stated that the United States, Denmark, and Greenland plan to formally sign the agreement during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. However, necessary parliamentary procedures must be completed in Denmark and Greenland for it to enter into force.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the proposed agreement would strengthen the shared security of the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. She also said it recognized the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.

The agreement is expected to increase the US military and strategic presence in the Arctic region, while also attempting to limit potential military or economic penetration by Russia and China.
