Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has made his first statement on the midterm election results. He said the Republican Party could not perform well because he was not contesting the elections himself.

Trump shared his first reaction on Truth Social. He wrote, “I was not a candidate in the election. If I had been a candidate, we would have won by a huge margin!”

However, while campaigning for Republican candidates, Trump had appealed to voters to imagine that he himself was the candidate when casting their votes.

Meanwhile, Trump acknowledged the party's defeat in an interview with The New York Times. He said, “I am fully prepared to accept these results. We will work together with the Democrats. We are excited about working with them. Hopefully, we will find a way forward.”

The US midterm elections concluded on Tuesday. Initial results indicate that President Trump's Republican Party is clearly trailing, while the opposition Democratic Party has taken the lead in both chambers of Congress.

The House of Representatives has a total of 435 seats, and elections were held for all of them. According to the initial trends, the opposition Democratic Party is leading in 147 seats, while President Trump's Republican Party is ahead in 88 seats.

Meanwhile, elections were held for 35 of the 100 Senate seats. The Democrats are also leading in the Senate. A party needs 51 seats to secure a majority.

At present, the Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, while the Democratic Party has 45. In addition, there are two independent senators who work alongside the Democrats. This puts the seat balance between the two sides at 53-47.

In the Florida gubernatorial election, Byron Donalds emerged victorious. Meanwhile, Indian-origin candidate Piya Dandia won the state's House of Representatives seat.
