India launches support hub in Toronto to help women in distress in Canada

Toronto (The Uttam Hindu) : The recently established "One Stop Centre for Women" (OSCW) at the Consulate General of India in Toronto, Canada, is now fully operational. It provides assistance to Indian women living in Canada when they find themselves in difficulties. If an Indian-origin woman, student, or employee faces any financial or criminal issues, they can contact us here.
According to information shared by the Indian Consulate General, the centre provides easy access and assistance to women in Canada, while creating a safe and inclusive environment.
Speaking to Canadian media outlet Radio Canada International, India's Acting Consul General in Toronto, Kapidhwaj Pratap Singh, said the aim of setting up the centre is to create a bridge between Canadian and Indian authorities, providing legal, financial and emotional support to Indian women.
Singh said, "Women in Canada need legal, financial, and other support in domestic violence, dowry, abuse, and many other cases. This center will help provide them with these services." Responding to a question about the center's approach, Singh said that while many organizations and institutions in Canada provide valuable support, cultural and social barriers often prevent women from speaking out, leaving them without support. He added, "In addition to permanent resident women of Indian origin living in Canada, visitors/workers or students can also use this center."
Singh said the initiative has received a very positive response. Within a few days of its launch, more than a dozen women have contacted the center with various concerns. He also emphasized that the center will also provide financial assistance to women in need.
The Consul General of India in Toronto established the OSCW on December 26, 2025, to assist Indian women facing difficulties. This includes domestic violence, abuse, family disputes, abandonment, exploitation, and legal issues. A statement issued by the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said, "The One Stop Centre will provide assistance to distressed women by connecting them to timely and appropriate help. This includes immediate counselling, psychosocial support, legal aid, and counselling support. It will also help women access essential community and social service resources in Canada. The OSSCW's entire intervention will be within the framework of local Canadian laws."
