Helsinki (The Uttam Hindu): Finnish President Alexander Stubb has strongly advocated for India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). He strongly warned that if an important country like India is not included in the Security Council, the United Nations (UN) will continue to weaken.

President Stubb described India's role as very important in global stability and development and highly praised the strategic thinking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

According to media reports, Finnish President Stubb said, “I am a big fan of India and I think India will be our next superpower along with America and China.”

Praising the Indian leadership, he said, “Be it Prime Minister Modi or External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, what India is doing right now reflects a deep strategic thinking, which earns respect across the world.”

"I've said this twice in the (UN) General Assembly. I want the UN Security Council expanded. Its membership should be at least doubled," Stubb said, calling for urgent reform of the UNSC.

He categorically stated, “It is wrong that countries like India are not on the Security Council.” He suggested that the Council should include one new member from Latin America, two from Africa and two from Asia.

The Finnish President warned, “If big players like India feel that they are not included in this 'game' (global system), then this institution (UN) will continue to weaken.”

Describing India as "essential" for global development, he said, "What India does is essential for the world." Stubb said Finland sees India as an important partner in shaping the international order.

Expressing his faith in 'multilateralism', he said that for the smooth functioning of this system, it is necessary that India joins the system from within, not from outside.
