Trump Calls PM Modi a ‘Very Good Friend’, Announces Resumption of India–US Trade Talks; Modi Responds with Optimism

New Delhi/Washington (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant step toward easing tensions, former US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of trade negotiations with India. Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States are continuing discussions to remove trade barriers.”
Trump also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his “very good friend” and expressed eagerness to speak with him in the coming weeks. “I am confident that reaching a successful conclusion for our two great nations will not be difficult,” he added. His remarks mark a softer stance from Washington following recent strains in bilateral ties.
Responding to Trump’s post on X, PM Modi wrote: “India and the United States are close friends and natural partners. I am confident our trade talks will unlock immense opportunities for the India–US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude discussions at the earliest. I also look forward to speaking with President Trump. Together, we will work to ensure a brighter and more prosperous future for our people.”
Earlier, during a press conference at the White House, Trump had said: “I will always remain a friend of Prime Minister Modi” and described him as a “great Prime Minister.” He underlined that the relationship between India and the United States is “special” and should not be a cause for concern.
Within hours, PM Modi responded on social media, appreciating Trump’s sentiments and reaffirming his support. “I deeply value President Trump’s words and his positive assessment of our relations. India and the US share a forward-looking, comprehensive, and strategic global partnership,” Modi said.
It is notable that on August 27, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, doubling the earlier 25% levy, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict. The resumption of trade talks is being seen as a possible thaw in the strained relationship.
