Indian-Origin Zohran Mamdani Becomes Mayor of New York, Secures Historic Win Despite Trump’s Threats

New York (The Uttam Hindu): Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the Mayor of New York City, achieving a historic victory despite criticism and threats from former US President Donald Trump. The Democratic Socialist Party candidate maintained a strong lead throughout the election, defeating independent candidate and former governor Andrew Cuomo, as well as Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani’s main contest was with independent candidate Andrew Cuomo. This election was seen as a major political test in the post-Trump era. With this victory, New York City, the largest city in the United States will now be led by Zohran Mamdani.
According to the city’s election commission, over 2 million people cast their votes, marking the highest voter turnout in a mayoral election since 1969. In the city of about 8.5 million residents, Mamdani’s rapid rise has surprised both the wealthy elite and political establishment. Despite strong opposition from Trump and the Republican Party, Mamdani’s popularity surged among ordinary citizens.
The 34-year-old leader has long advocated for major reforms aimed at reducing economic inequality. His bold ideas and inspiring vision attracted thousands of supporters. Mamdani also received backing from prominent progressive leaders such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, cast her vote in Astoria, Queens, and encouraged people to vote through an Instagram story captioned, “Let’s go NYC.”
