Iran shows reach beyond Middle East, fires missiles toward Indian Ocean base
Iran reportedly targets Diego Garcia base in Indian Ocean with missiles, raising concerns over extended conflict and its long-range military capabilities.

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The ongoing Iran–US–Israel conflict is now showing signs of expanding beyond the Middle East, with its impact beginning to reflect on the global stage. In a significant development, Iran reportedly targeted a military base in the Indian Ocean, marking a shift in the scope of the conflict.
Missile strike on Diego Garcia base
According to reports, Iran launched at least two mid-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia, a joint military base operated by the United States and the United Kingdom. The base is located in the central Indian Ocean, south of the equator, and serves as a key strategic hub for Western military operations.
It is reported that one missile failed mid-flight, while the second was intercepted by a US defense system launched from a warship before reaching its target.
Questions over Iran’s missile capability
The reported strike has raised serious questions about Iran’s missile range. The attack location lies nearly 4,000 kilometers away from Iran, suggesting a capability beyond previously stated limits.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had claimed that the country had voluntarily limited its missile range to around 2,000 kilometers. However, the latest incident indicates a potentially greater reach, though no official clarification has been issued by Iranian authorities so far.
Strategic importance of the base
Diego Garcia is considered a crucial military installation for the US and UK. It plays a central role in operations across Asia and the Middle East, hosting long-range bombers, nuclear-powered submarines, and guided missile ships. The base also includes extensive fuel storage, radar systems, and command infrastructure that support long-distance military missions.
The distance of Diego Garcia from India is approximately 1,800 kilometers, further highlighting its strategic position in the region.
Rising global concerns
This development has intensified concerns over a broader escalation of the conflict. While there has been no official confirmation from the US or UK governments, the reported incident underscores growing tensions and the possibility of the conflict spreading beyond its original geographic limits.
