United Nations (The Uttam Hindu): A fierce diplomatic debate was witnessed between Israel and Pakistan in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where Israel attacked Pakistan for its "double policies" on terrorism. Israel bluntly said that Pakistan cannot change the fact that Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was given shelter on its soil and he was killed there.

This heated debate took place on Thursday in the Security Council during a discussion on the Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Danny Danon took aim at Pakistani representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, saying, "When bin Laden was killed in Pakistan, the world did not ask the question 'Why was a terrorist targeted on foreign soil?'… The question was 'Why was a terrorist given shelter?'… The same question should be asked today."

Israel further stated that when Osama bin Laden was not given any exemption, then Hamas should also not be given any exemption.

Earlier, Pakistani representative Ahmed had criticized Israel in his statement calling its attack in Qatar an "unlawful and unprovoked aggression". He alleged that this attack is part of Israel's "continuous aggressive pattern" that undermines regional peace. Ahmed also accused Israel of "brutal military action" in Gaza and repeated cross-border attacks in Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen.

Incidentally, the meeting took place on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks masterminded by Osama bin Laden. Referring to this, Israeli representative Danon said, “That tragic day of 9/11 was a day of fire and blood for Israel just like October 7.” He reminded the Council that after 9/11, the UNSC passed a resolution which clearly stated that no nation can shelter, fund or help terrorists. He said, “Any government that does so violates the binding responsibilities of this Council. This principle was clear then and should remain as clear today.”
