Tel Aviv/Beirut (The Uttam Hindu) : Israel launched massive airstrikes across Lebanon on Wednesday night. Reports indicate that more than 100 targets were struck within just 10 minutes. Israel claims these targets were Hezbollah command centers and military bases. More than 250 people are reported to have been killed in the attacks, although official figures vary.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, at least two people have been confirmed dead and around 890 injured. Officials say the death toll could rise. The southern suburbs of Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley have been severely damaged. Hours after the attack, rescue and relief efforts are still underway, with people trapped under the rubble being searched for.

According to the Health Ministry, the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 1,700 people, including at least 130 children. Israel claims to have killed approximately 1,100 Hezbollah fighters.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has rejected Pakistan's claim that Lebanon is also included in the ceasefire agreement.

In Washington, US President Donald Trump's press secretary, Caroline Levitt, also clarified that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Lebanese presidential office has stated that it will continue efforts to maintain peace in the region.

The decades-old conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has recently escalated, with Hezbollah launching rocket attacks on Israel in alleged retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Although a ceasefire was agreed upon in November 2024, attacks between the two sides continued. Israeli officials had already indicated that the military operation in Lebanon would continue regardless of any agreement with Iran.

Recent Israeli media reports have also revealed that the army has no intention of halting the operation, and it has also been acknowledged that completely disarming Hezbollah will not be easy.
