Imphal (The Uttam Hindu): The political uncertainty in Manipur has now ended. The central government has taken a major decision and lifted President's rule in the state. The Union Home Ministry issued a notification in this regard, announcing the immediate end of President's rule. This clears the way for the formation of a new government in the state, and senior leader Yumnam Khemchand has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur.
Oath taking ceremony held at Lok Bhavan
Following orders from the Home Ministry, the swearing-in ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Imphal. Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yumnam Khemchand. Tight security arrangements were in place, and senior administrative officials were present. With the lifting of President's rule and the formation of a new government, it is hoped that stability will return to the state.
Journey from Engineer to CM's chair
62-year-old Yumnam Khemchand belongs to the Meitei community and is the MLA from the Singjamei assembly constituency. Before entering politics, he was an engineer by profession. Khemchand is considered one of the state's most prominent leaders and is considered very close to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Given his background and influence, the party has expressed confidence in him.
Khemchand has been a minister in the Biren government.
Yumnam Khemchand has extensive administrative experience. He previously held important positions as Minister of the Municipal Administration and Housing Department (MAHUD) in N. Biren Singh's government. Interestingly, he was also a strong contender for the 2022 Chief Ministership, but things fell through. Now, amid changed circumstances, the high command has entrusted him with the reins of the state.
