New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amidst the turmoil in the Middle East and the threat of a potential oil crisis looming over India, shocking news has emerged. The US Treasury Department, which had been continuously pressuring India to reduce its Russian oil imports, has now taken a major U-turn. The US has granted Indian refineries a special temporary exemption of 30 days to purchase oil from Russia. This sudden decision has brought significant relief to Russian oil tankers that had been stranded at sea for weeks and were unable to find any buyers.

Why were oil tankers worth crores standing abandoned in the sea?

New US sanctions created significant uncertainty regarding international payments and insurance. This fear prevented Russian oil tankers from unloading their oil at ports immediately. The US crackdown raised serious questions about these ships' port entry and financial transactions. Consequently, Indian oil refineries also stepped aside to avoid inadvertently violating any international regulations or sanctions. As a result, these massive oil-laden ships were stranded mid-sea. Now, with the green light from the US, the path for these ships to reach India has been completely cleared.

Trump administration's big bet to thwart Iran's move

This move by the US is part of a deliberate strategy to keep the global energy market stable amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The US administration believes that this exemption will maintain the oil supply chain in the global market and will thwart Iran's attempts to hold the world's energy needs hostage. Describing India as a vital partner on the social media platform 'X', US official Bessant clarified that oil and gas production is at its highest level under President Trump's energy agenda.

Russia will not have any major advantage

The US has also made it clear that this 30-day exemption is only a short-term measure and will not provide any significant financial benefit to the Russian government. This permission is only granted for oil vessels already stranded at sea. Furthermore, the US has clearly expressed its hope that New Delhi will increase its purchases of American oil in the future.
