Say Cheese! World's Priciest Cheese Sold for a Whopping Rs 35 Lakh

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Have you ever heard of a piece of cheese being sold for lakhs of rupees? A special cheese in Spain has made a Guinness World Record. This cheese named Cabrales, which was prepared by keeping it in a cave for 10 months, has been bought in an auction for $ 42,232 (about Rs 35 lakh).
This unique cheese was made by the Angel Diaz Herrero cheese factory. It was 'ripened' for 10 months in a cave in the mountains. This record-breaking cheese has been bought by a restaurant called El Llagar de Colloto. Guinness World Records has declared this 'dairy delight' as the most expensive cheese ever sold at auction.
This cheese, weighing about 2.3 kg (5 pounds), was made from cow's milk. Its specialty was that it was prepared by keeping it for 10 months in the Los Majos cave, located at an altitude of about 5,000 feet above sea level. The humidity and temperature of these special caves give the cheese a unique taste and aroma. This is the third consecutive time that Cabroles cheese has won the title of the world's most expensive cheese.
Bidding at the auction began at €3,000 and ended after 40 strong bids. The winning bid was made by Ivan Suarez, owner of El Lagar de Colato restaurant, who has topped the auction for five consecutive years. “It is a great honour for me to continue this tradition,” said Suarez after his record-breaking purchase.
