Pakistan's True Colors: Kashmir Issue Surfaces at UNSC Under Its Presidency

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): As soon as it got the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Pakistan has returned to its old agenda. It is working on a dual strategy of using this powerful platform against India and enhancing its international image. According to the information, Pakistan is planning to raise the issue of Kashmir during a high-level open debate to be held this week. Along with this, it is also trying to get a strong role for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the United Nations.
A high-level open debate on the topic of 'peaceful resolution of international disputes' is to be held this week under the chairmanship of Pakistan's Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. According to a Hindustan Times report, Pakistan can take advantage of this meeting to raise the issue of Kashmir. However, India is also not going to sit silent on this and is fully prepared to give a befitting reply to any such attempt.
Pakistan's intentions became clear when its permanent representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, said in a statement on July 1, "Now the time has come to find a solution to the Kashmir dispute. This is not only the responsibility of Pakistan but also of the permanent members."
As part of its second strategy, Pakistan is engaged in getting the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) a bigger role in the United Nations. A separate meeting on OIC and United Nations partnership is also proposed under the chairmanship of Pakistani Foreign Minister Dar. The OIC, which comprises 57 Muslim countries, has been continuously making statements against India on Kashmir since the removal of Article 370 in 2019.
India is not comfortable with this growing partnership between OIC and the United Nations. Given the anti-India attitude of OIC, it is believed that India will register its objection to this in the Security Council. It is noteworthy that under Chapter 8 of the United Nations Charter, the UN can partner with regional organizations for international peace and security, as it has done with the African Union. But given the track record of OIC, India is concerned about this partnership.
