Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): Political tension in Bangladesh is once again at its peak. On Wednesday, fierce violence broke out in Gopalganj district during the rally of the National Citizen Party, in which 4 people died and more than 13 people were injured. Those who lost their lives in the violence include Dipto Saha, Ramzan Kazi, Sohale and Iman. The sensitivity of the incident also increases because Gopalganj is the home district of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also the birthplace of her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Political violence in Bangladesh: 4 killed and many injured in Gopalganj; Government imposes curfew : According to reports, Awami League workers were protesting against a rally of the National Citizen Party scheduled to be held at Pora Park. They allegedly felled trees on roads to block the path of the rally and protested armed with weapons. Later, as the situation worsened, government vehicles were set on fire, and the rally venue was also attacked.

Locals say that several people were shot in the firing by security forces. Dipto Saha, who was not associated with any political organization, was shot while returning to his shop. A shopkeeper said, "I saw the security forces firing and two people fell down after being shot." To control the situation, curfew has been imposed in the southern districts, and all school examinations in Gopalganj have been postponed. Gopalganj civil surgeon Abu Sayed Mohammad Farooq said the death toll was four and the injured were more than 13.

It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina is currently living in exile in India and the activities of her party Awami League are banned in Bangladesh. After this violence, government action against Awami League workers may intensify. Many Awami League leaders are already underground, and this incident has further intensified the action against them. The situation still remains tense and a high alert has been issued by the government.
