Remove 50% Tariff on India: US Lawmakers Challenge Trump’s Decision

New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): After the decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on India, US President Donald Trump is facing strong criticism within his own country. Opposing this move, a resolution has been introduced in the US Congress demanding the removal of the 50 percent tariff imposed on India.
The resolution has been jointly presented in the House of Representatives by Indian-origin US lawmaker Raja Krishnamoorthi, along with lawmakers Deborah Ross and Mark Veasey. The proposal calls for ending the national emergency declared by President Trump, under which the 50 percent tariff on India was imposed. The lawmakers described this step as illegal and harmful to the US economy.
Earlier, a similar resolution was introduced in the US Congress after a 50 percent tariff was imposed on Brazil. Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), President Trump declared a national emergency and increased the existing 25 percent tariff on India to 50 percent. This decision came into effect on August 27.
According to Raja Krishnamoorthi, President Trump’s tariff policy toward India is irresponsible and damages the important strategic partnership between the two countries. He said that instead of promoting US interests, the decision is disrupting supply chains. This is directly hurting American workers and forcing consumers to buy goods at higher prices. He added that if these tariffs are removed, the US can move forward with meaningful dialogue with India on key economic and security issues.
