New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Amid ongoing economic challenges and a severe foreign exchange shortage, Pakistan has received major relief from Russia. Russia has completely lifted its earlier ban on importing potatoes from Pakistan. Following this decision, potato consignments from Pakistan’s Punjab province have been officially allowed to enter Russian markets from April 8. This move is expected to boost Pakistan’s agricultural exports and provide significant financial benefits to its farmers.

Relief for economy and farmers

Punjab is the main hub of potato production in Pakistan. With Russia reopening its market, farmers are likely to benefit from increased demand. As a large and cold country, Russia has high consumption of potatoes, which will create new export opportunities. Earlier, due to oversupply in the domestic market, farmers often had to sell their produce at low prices. Now, access to an international market will help them get better returns. Additionally, Pakistan, which is facing a shortage of foreign currency, will gain a new source of dollar earnings, helping reduce its trade deficit.

Reason for ban and its removal

It is important to note that in May 2025, Russia imposed a strict ban on potatoes from Punjab, citing the presence of pests such as potato tuber moth and tomato wilt virus. In February this year, the Pakistani government raised the issue with Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance. Pakistan’s Department of Plant Protection strongly opposed the ban and submitted pest records and laboratory reports. These reports confirmed that the potato crops were free from the mentioned pests and diseases. Based on this evidence, Russia officially removed the phytosanitary restrictions that had been in place since May 2025.

Pakistan prepares for higher exports

Initially, Russian authorities have allowed three Pakistani exporters to ship potatoes: Chash International, Zahid Kinno Grinding and Waxing Plant, and National Fruit. According to Pakistan’s Trade Attaché in Moscow, Shabana Aziz, more companies may be added if they meet Russian standards. Virtual business meetings are also being organized to support exporters.

Pakistan is currently witnessing a bumper potato harvest, with total production reaching around 12 million tonnes this season. Out of this, nearly 4 million tonnes are surplus. The opening of the Russian market will help absorb this excess supply, stabilize domestic prices, and increase farmers’ income. It will also generate valuable foreign exchange for the country. With challenges in exporting goods to Central Asia after the closure of the Torkham border, access to the Russian market is being seen as a significant opportunity for Pakistan.
