Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three day ceasefire from May 9 to May 11 calling it an important step towards ending the ongoing war. Trump said the temporary truce would coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations and noted that Ukraine also played a major role during World War II making the occasion significant for both nations. According to Trump all military operations and attacks between the two countries will stop during this period.

The US President also confirmed that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to exchange 1000 prisoners each as part of the arrangement. Trump claimed that he personally initiated the proposal and appreciated Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for agreeing to the terms. He described the development as a major turning point and expressed hope that it could pave the way for ending one of the most destructive conflicts since World War II.

Trump further said negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent settlement are continuing and progress is being made with each passing day. If fully implemented the ceasefire would become one of the longest pauses in fighting since the conflict began. The announcement comes amid growing international pressure on both Russia and Ukraine to move towards a negotiated solution while intense fighting continues in several regions.
