New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) - Elon Musk-owned satellite internet service Starlink officially started its services in Sri Lanka on Wednesday. With this launch, Sri Lanka has become the third country in South Asia to get access to Starlink's internet service. With this, Sri Lanka has become another neighbouring country of India after Bhutan and Bangladesh to get this service. Starlink wrote in a post on social media platform X, "Starlink's high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Sri Lanka." Starlink is getting closer to launching its services in India. Last month, the company received a crucial license from the Department of Telecommunications, nearly three years after it first applied.

According to reports, Starlink may start offering services in India within the next two months. The final step for Starlink to start operations in India is formal approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe). The agency has already issued a draft letter of intent (LOI) to the company. Once the two parties sign this document, Starlink will be officially approved to start its services in the Indian market. Starlink provides internet service through a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. The company currently operates the world's largest satellite constellation, with more than 6,750 satellites in orbit.

According to the company, Starlink provides fast internet with low delay, making it suitable even for remote areas with limited connectivity. Starlink services in Asia are already available in several countries including Mongolia, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen and Azerbaijan. Globally, it serves users in more than 100 countries, offering both residential and roaming internet plans.
