Thailand in turmoil: Court abruptly suspends Prime Minister, reasons spark speculation

Bangkok (The Uttam Hindu): Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Phitsanulok Shinawatra from office. He is accused of having a phone conversation with Cambodian leader Hun Sen, during which he allegedly criticized the commander of Thailand’s army. This is considered a serious offense in Thailand, where the military wields significant influence. After the leaked call, widespread anger erupted across the country.
The court voted 7-2 to remove the Prime Minister from his position. It stated that an investigation into the complaint against him will proceed. If found guilty, he could be permanently removed from office. The Prime Minister has admitted to violating the code of conduct and will not be able to perform his duties until the investigation concludes. Until a final decision is made, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will lead the government.
