New York (The Uttam Hindu): United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday made strong remarks on global order and the role of major powers, saying that the world cannot be run by the influence or instructions of a single country. He stressed that such an approach cannot solve global challenges. During his comments, he indirectly referred to both the United States and China.

Speaking to journalists at the start of his tenth and final year in office, Guterres expressed concern over the changing global landscape and rising tensions. He said that during his tenure he has witnessed the outbreak of multiple conflicts and wars, underscoring the urgent need for international cooperation. Later this year, the UN Security Council is expected to begin the process of selecting his successor.

Guterres said that global challenges cannot be resolved through dominance by one power, nor by dividing the world into two opposing camps. He made it clear that a system centered only on the US and China cannot offer sustainable solutions. Emphasizing the need for a multipolar world order, he said balance among several influential powers is essential for a stable, peaceful, and inclusive world. In this context, he cited recent international trade developments and described the India–European Union trade agreement as a positive sign.

His remarks come at a time when several countries have raised concerns about American dominance in global affairs. The statement also follows US President Donald Trump’s recent proposal of a “Board of Peace,” which he presented as an alternative to the United Nations. Responding to this, Guterres said that the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security lies with the United Nations and its Security Council.

The UN chief further warned that international law is being repeatedly violated, cooperation is declining, and multilateral institutions are under attack from multiple directions. He said those who start wars often go unpunished, leading to increased tension, mistrust, and greater opportunities for wrongdoing. Despite these challenges, Guterres asserted that the United Nations will not give up and will continue making every possible effort to promote peace.
