Dhaka (The Uttam Hindu): A devastating accident in Bangladesh claimed at least 12 lives and left around 20 people injured after a mail train collided with a passenger bus at the Padua Bazar level crossing in Comilla early Sunday morning. The impact was so intense that the bus was completely destroyed and several passengers died on the spot including seven men three women and two children

According to police and eyewitnesses the train dragged the bus for a long distance before coming to a halt. Many injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals where some later died during treatment. Officials said there was no gatekeeper present at the crossing at the time which raised serious safety concerns

Rescue teams including police and fire personnel reached the spot and carried out relief operations while locals also helped pull out the injured. Authorities have ordered multiple inquiries into the incident and suspended two gatekeepers. Train services on key routes were disrupted for several hours before normal operations were restored
