Travel via Germany becomes easier: Indian citizens will no longer need a transit visa

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): During a meeting held on Monday, January 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed several key issues related to defence, trade, and technological cooperation. Both leaders agreed to further strengthen India–Germany relations. Important announcements were also made regarding enhanced cooperation in critical minerals and the semiconductor sector.
Following the meeting, India and Germany signed a total of 19 agreements. Representatives from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to jointly address challenges arising from global political instability. As part of these developments, Germany has provided significant relief to Indian travelers.
Under the new decision, Indian citizens will no longer be required to obtain a transit visa while travelling through Germany. Earlier, if an Indian traveler was flying to a third country and had a layover or flight change at a German airport, a German transit visa was mandatory to continue the journey.
A transit visa allowed passengers to land at a German airport and proceed with onward travel. However, with the latest policy change by the German government, Indian citizens can now transit through German airports without a transit visa. This move is expected to save time and simplify procedures for Indian passengers undertaking international travel.
