Trump administration tightens rules, over 100,000 foreign visas cancelled; here is the reason

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): The Trump administration has cancelled the visas of more than 100,000 foreign nationals in less than a year. According to the US State Department, this is the largest such action taken so far as part of efforts to strengthen border control and public safety.
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that protecting American citizens and safeguarding US sovereignty remain the top priorities of the Trump administration. He described the move as far stricter than actions taken in previous years.
Pigott stated that in less than one year, the State Department revoked over 100,000 visas, marking a record and reflecting an increase of more than 150 percent compared to visa cancellations since 2024. The department said that many of the individuals whose visas were cancelled were either accused of or convicted of various crimes, including assault, theft, and driving under the influence.
According to the administration, the sharp rise in visa cancellations is due to a new and more rigorous screening and monitoring system introduced during President Donald Trump’s tenure. Pigott explained that the recently launched Continuous Vetting Center ensures that all foreign nationals present in the US comply with American laws, and that visas are revoked immediately if an individual is found to pose a threat to public or national security.
Officials said that earlier, checks were mainly conducted at the time of visa application or entry into the US. Under the new system, ongoing monitoring is carried out even after entry, allowing swift action if a foreign national becomes involved in criminal activity.
Pigott added that the policy reflects the administration’s broader approach to national security, stressing that the Trump administration will put America first and protect the country from foreign nationals who pose risks to public safety or national security.
The statement did not specify which countries were most affected by the visa cancellations, nor did it clarify how many tourists, students, or long-term residents were included. The move comes at a time when visa policy has become a key issue in both domestic and foreign policy under the Trump administration. Under US law, the government has the authority to revoke visas if a foreign national is deemed ineligible or poses a security threat.
