Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump on Thursday adopted a tough stance on trade matters linked to Canada and Cuba, warning of new tariff measures. Trump said that tariffs of up to 50 percent could be imposed on Canadian aircraft sold in the United States.

The move is being seen as the latest escalation in the ongoing trade tensions between the US and Canada. The announcement comes at a time when relations between President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney remain strained.

During the same period, President Trump also signed an executive order under which any country selling or supplying oil to Cuba could face tariffs on goods exported to the United States. This decision is expected to increase pressure on Mexico, which has been one of the suppliers of oil to Cuba.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said earlier this week that her government has temporarily halted oil supplies to Cuba. She clarified that the decision was taken as a sovereign move by Mexico and not due to pressure from the United States. It is noteworthy that President Trump has been continuously urging Mexico to distance itself from the Cuban government.
