Trump sends special envoy to discuss peace plan with Putin; Zelensky ready to negotiate proposed agreement

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine appear to be gaining momentum. US President Donald Trump has sent his special envoy to Moscow to discuss the proposed 28-point peace agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also seems prepared to talk about the peace plan.
In a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, President Trump wrote, “With the hope of finalizing this peace plan, I have instructed my special envoy Steve Witkoff to meet President Putin in Moscow. At the same time, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will meet the people of Ukraine.” Trump added that the 28-point peace plan has been drafted by the United States after receiving significant input from both sides. Only a few points remain unresolved.
Trump praised the team working on the draft, saying they did excellent work over the past week. According to Xinhua News Agency, he said he expects to meet both Putin and Zelensky soon. However, he clarified that such meetings will only take place once the peace plan is approved by both sides or reaches its final stage.
Meanwhile, Zelensky said that the peace plan prepared by Ukraine and the US in Geneva can be turned into a deeper agreement. He confirmed that he had discussed the document with Ukraine’s negotiating team.
Zelensky highlighted that the principles outlined in the draft could be shaped into a comprehensive agreement and that it is in their shared interest to ensure real security. Earlier, Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential office, said Zelensky wants to meet Trump to finalize a joint agreement aimed at ending the Ukraine crisis.
Yermak mentioned that both the US and Ukraine have reached a principal agreement on most aspects of the proposed peace plan. He added that the new document includes several changes compared to the original 28-point proposal drafted by the US. Zelensky hopes for direct talks with Trump regarding regional issues.
After the US proposed the 28-point peace plan, representatives from the US, Ukraine, and several European nations met in Geneva on Sunday to discuss it. According to a US Army statement, on Monday and Tuesday, US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll also discussed the draft with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi.
