Trump Shows Leniency to China, Plans Visas for 6 Lakh Chinese Students

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Former US President Donald Trump, who on one hand talked about imposing additional tariffs on countries like India, now seems to be kind to China. He has shown a big policy change towards China and announced to provide US visas to 6 lakh Chinese students. This decision of Trump has come at a time when important talks are going on between the two countries regarding trade.
Responding to a reporter's question at the White House on Monday, Trump said that the US and China have a 'very important relationship'. He said, "We are going to allow their (Chinese) students to come. This is very important, 600,000 students. We will work closely with China." With this announcement, Trump has opened the way for 6 lakh Chinese students to study in American colleges.
This decision is a major U-turn from the aggressive stance adopted earlier by the Trump administration, which talked about cancelling the visas of Chinese citizens, especially those associated with the Communist Party or sensitive research areas. Trump's new announcement has now led to criticism by even his staunch supporters.
This move has been taken amid high-level trade talks going on between the world's two largest economies. Both countries are trying to reach an agreement on issues such as tariffs, supply of rare earth magnets important for American industries and China's access to advanced AI chips made in the US. However, amid this softening, Trump also warned China that Beijing will have to ensure Washington's access to rare earth magnets, otherwise it will have to face a 200 percent tariff.
