Trump warns Iran, says situation could become ‘very painful’ if no deal is reached

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran, urging it to quickly agree to a nuclear deal or face serious consequences. Trump said that if no agreement is reached, the situation could become “very painful.”

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “We have to make a deal, otherwise things will become very difficult and painful. I don’t want that, but a deal is necessary.”

When asked about a deadline, Trump said the process should not drag on for long. He indicated that a decision should be taken within the next one month and that Iran must agree quickly.

Trump clearly warned that if talks fail, conditions could worsen further. “If there is no deal, the story will be different,” he said, adding that without a fair and strong agreement, Iran could face extremely tough times.

The statement came a day after Trump met Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel. Trump said the meeting went well and that Netanyahu understands the situation, but the final decision rests with him.

When asked whether Netanyahu wanted talks to stop, Trump said negotiations would continue as long as he believes it is right. He also warned that if no agreement is reached, a “Phase 2” would begin, which would be very harsh for Iran. However, he did not clarify what actions would be included in this phase.

Trump’s remarks show that the United States wants to keep talks open while simultaneously increasing pressure on Iran.

Iran’s nuclear programme remains a major flashpoint in West Asia. During Trump’s earlier term, the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal, after which tensions over uranium enrichment and regional security sharply increased.

For India, stability in the Gulf region is economically and strategically important. India imports a large share of its crude oil from West Asia, and millions of Indian citizens live in the region. Any escalation in US-Iran tensions could impact oil markets and regional security.
