New York (The Uttam Hindu): Lawmakers from both major US political parties have jointly requested President Donald Trump to personally attend the Quad Summit in India and other important meetings in Asia. The initiative was led by Gregory W. Meeks, member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The appeal letter was signed by several lawmakers including Young Kim, Ami Bera, Bill Huizenga, and Sydney Kamlager-Dove. The letter stated that the Indo-Pacific region is critical for US security and global strategy. Lawmakers said that as China is trying to expand its influence in the region, the presence of the US President is important to show Washington’s leadership clearly.

The lawmakers urged Trump to personally attend three major international events this year: the East Asia Summit in Malaysia, the APEC Summit in South Korea, and the Quad Leaders Meet in India. They said attending these events would strengthen US commitment and increase trust among regional partners.

The letter also mentioned that the Quad alliance consisting of US, India, Japan, and Australia is a key tool to maintain stability and balance in the Indo-Pacific. The lawmakers called it a major strategic pillar for US interests.

This appeal comes after an amendment introduced by Democratic lawmaker Sydney Kamlager-Dove in the Department of State Policy Provisions Act, which also urged the President to actively participate in the Quad partnership and attend the year-end summit.

Lawmakers said that President Trump’s personal attendance will not only increase US influence but also show that America is committed to long-term partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
