US sends message to Europe on Greenland, Vice President says Trump’s remarks should not be taken lightly

Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US Vice President JD Vance has urged European countries to take the Greenland issue seriously, stating that remarks made by President Donald Trump should not be dismissed lightly. He said Greenland is critically important not only for American security but for global security as well.
Speaking at a press conference at the White House, Vance said Greenland plays a key role in the global missile defence system. He warned that if US allies fail to take strong steps to secure the region, America may be forced to act on its own.
Responding to questions about European opposition to the idea that Greenland could be sold, Vance said the US administration would continue to handle the matter through diplomacy. “Some discussions will happen privately and some publicly. This process will continue,” he said. He also indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio may meet leaders from Denmark and Greenland in the coming weeks.
Addressing criticism of President Trump’s statements, Vance said the media and certain sections in Europe were overreacting. He stressed that Greenland is vital for global missile security and added that hostile forces have shown growing interest in the region.
Vance said the US is urging its European allies to strengthen Greenland’s security. “We are simply asking our European friends to take the security of this territory more seriously. If they fail to do so, the United States will have to take action,” he said.
However, he did not specify what form such action might take, stating that the final decision would rest with President Donald Trump. Greenland is an autonomous territory under Denmark and has long been considered strategically important due to its Arctic location and its role in North Atlantic security and early warning systems.
