US shutdown disrupts over 4,000 flights, 118 cancelled

WASHINGTON (The Uttam Hindu): More than 4,000 flights were delayed and 118 canceled in the United States on Monday due to the 27-day shutdown that has disrupted air travel. These delays are being caused by staff shortages at airports and air traffic control towers across the country.
According to FlightAware, more than 8,700 flights were delayed on Sunday alone as staffing shortages continue to worsen. Nearly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 transportation security officers are working without pay, putting a severe strain on air services. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the staffing shortages are impacting flights in the Southeast and at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The FAA implemented ground delays at Los Angeles International Airport, holding flights for an average of 25 minutes. "Employees received notice on Thursday and Friday. They were also informed that their paychecks scheduled for Tuesday would not be paid," Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday. Duffy described the stress air traffic controllers are facing.
He added, "I've spoken to air traffic controllers, and the stress is evident on their faces. These are people who rely on monthly salaries. They're worried about fueling their cars and taking care of their children." The Department of Transportation has warned that flights will continue, but delays and cancellations are likely if the shutdown continues for a long time. Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status in advance and be prepared for long waits at the airport.
Experts say clearing the backlog of delayed flights will take time even after the shutdown ends, as staff shortages and operational issues will continue to challenge the system. Airports across the country are facing continued disruptions as no immediate resolution to the federal impasse appears in sight.
