Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Kevin Hassett, the economic advisor at the White House, said that a trade agreement between India and the United States could be finalized soon. He added that India and the US are good friends and the Trump administration remains very optimistic about the deal. According to him, “We are hopeful. India is our friendly nation, and we expect things to move forward quickly.”

Hassett also explained that the issue is slightly complex because India maintains close relations with Russia as well. He said the India–US partnership involves multiple layers, which makes the situation more complicated. On the same day, India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal also indicated that the trade agreement is almost in its final stage.

Agrawal told reporters in Delhi that both countries are holding regular online meetings regarding the bilateral trade deal. Although there is no fixed deadline, the first phase of talks is progressing rapidly. Last week, US President Donald Trump also gave positive signals about strengthening India–US ties, raising hopes that the two major democracies may soon finalize the agreement.

Trump said his conversations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are “going very well,” and he may visit Delhi next year. He also mentioned that the tariffs imposed on India could be reduced in the future. According to him, the US and India are close to reaching a deal that would benefit both sides.

While some Indian officials are hopeful, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal clarified that India will not compromise on the interests of farmers, the dairy sector, or laborers in any trade negotiations with other countries. He said India wants a fair and balanced trade agreement, and its final timing will depend on the preparedness of both sides. He added that the agreement could be finalized tomorrow, next month, or even next year the government is ready for all possibilities. Meanwhile, India is also increasing its import of oil and gas from the US to improve the trade balance between the two nations.
