Dubai Court Sentences Indian Billionaire Balwinder Singh Sahni to 5 Years in Prison for Money Laundering
Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): A Dubai court has found Indian billionaire Balwinder Singh Sahni guilty of money laundering and sentenced him to 5 years in prison. Additionally, he has been ordered to forfeit 150 million dirhams (approximately ₹344 crore) and pay a fine of 5 lakh dirhams (approximately ₹1.14 crore). After completing his sentence, Sahni will be deported from the country.
Money Laundering Scheme
Sahni, in collaboration with a criminal gang, was involved in money laundering through shell companies. They set up fake companies and misappropriated approximately 150 million dirhams (about ₹344 crore). The investigation revealed several suspicious financial transactions, leading to Sahni's conviction for running a money laundering network.
Conviction and Sentencing
The court not only sentenced Sahni but also confiscated all his funds and electronic devices. Along with Sahni, his son and 32 other accused have also been sentenced. Some of the accused were tried in their absence, while others received lighter sentences, including one year in prison and a fine of 200,000 AED. Three companies involved in the case have been fined 50 million dirhams.
