He is considered a big match winner for Australia. His unbeaten 201-run innings against Afghanistan in the World Cup 2023 is still fresh in the minds of cricket lovers, which he scored in difficult circumstances.
Glenn Maxwell had already informed chief selector George Bailey about his retirement. During the Champions Trophy in February-March, 36-year-old Maxwell had told that he would not be able to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Maxwell said in the 'Final Word' podcast, "I told him at that time that 'I don't think I will be able to do this (play in the 2027 ODI World Cup).'"
Glenn Maxwell further said, "I think now the time has come to plan for other players in my place. They should work on it and try to make that place theirs for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully he will get enough time so that he can succeed in that role." Maxwell has scored 3990 runs in his ODI career and his best score was 201 runs, which is counted among the best innings in ODI cricket history.
