Trump Targets Global Cinema, Slaps 100% Tariff on Non-American Films
Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has taken a big and controversial step and announced a 100% tariff on films made outside the US. Trump said that the Hollywood industry is "dying" and the reason for this is the huge subsidies and facilities being given by other countries, which encourage American producers to make films abroad.
'Hollywood is dying', Trump gives a blow to films made outside America, imposes 100 percent tariff: Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social, "This is a well-planned effort to destroy the American film industry. This is a threat to national security. Hollywood, and many sectors of America, are on the verge of destruction."
Trump reiterated that he wants movies to be shot and produced in the US again. Following this statement, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also posted on Twitter (formerly Twitter) saying that the administration is working in this direction.
It's unclear whether the tariffs will directly target foreign studios or also affect U.S. companies that shoot overseas.
It is worth noting that film and television production in Los Angeles has declined by about 40% in the last decade. To stop this decline, the Trump administration is trying to make filmmaking in America attractive again. Now will this decision really save Hollywood or will it give a blow to the global film industry? The debate has started on this.
