Will Punjab Grow Opium? Govt's Major Announcement Ends Speculation

Punjab (The Uttam Hindu) : In a decisive move aimed at combating drug abuse in Punjab, the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has announced a complete ban on opium cultivation in the state. The announcement was made by Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during a press conference, where he emphasized the state's zero-tolerance approach toward narcotic substances. Cheema stated unequivocally that "there will be no cultivation of opium in Punjab", highlighting the direct link between opium farming and the production of lethal drugs such as heroin. He warned that legalizing or allowing opium cultivation would open the floodgates to a dangerous resurgence of drug trafficking and addiction in the state.

Strong Words Against Congress

Cheema took a hard stance against Congress President Raja Warring, accusing him of using his platform to "promote opium cultivation" — a move Cheema labeled as "anti-state" and "highly irresponsible." “Raja Warring talks a lot about opium cultivation in his speeches, which is completely wrong and sends the wrong message to our youth,” said Cheema, asserting that the Congress leader’s comments are indirectly incentivizing the drug trade.

Blame on Previous Governments

The Finance Minister didn't hold back in his criticism of past administrations. He blamed the Congress, Akali Dal, and BJP for what he called the "drug epidemic" that has plagued Punjab for years. According to Cheema, these parties "sowed the seeds of drug abuse", which the current AAP government is now striving to uproot. “We inherited a Punjab ravaged by addiction,” said Cheema. “But under CM Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, we are committed to a drug-free future for our youth.”

A Message of Reform and Responsibility

The Mann government’s move is being viewed as part of a broader push to rehabilitate Punjab’s youth, combat drug addiction, and restore the state's social fabric. Cheema reaffirmed the government’s stand, saying, "Punjab does not need opium cultivation. We need education, employment, and empowerment." The government’s stance is expected to spark political debates in the coming days, especially with Congress leaders likely to counter the allegations. However, the AAP government appears firm in its decision to "shut the door on narcotics" in Punjab, focusing instead on health, welfare, and long-term recovery.
