Saharanpur (The Uttam Hindu): A wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district has become a talking point for sending a strong message against the dowry system. A military family chose simplicity and values over tradition by conducting a dowry-free marriage.

Only ₹1 and a coconut as token

Major Madhur Chaudhary, son of retired soldier Chaudhary Ompal Singh from Mirpur village, got married to Captain Jyoti Saurout from the Braj region. What made the wedding special was that the groom’s family accepted only ₹1 and a coconut as a token, breaking the usual trend of heavy dowry exchanges.

“Values matter more than wealth”

The groom’s father said that although proposals had come from several well-established families, he had already decided that the marriage would be dowry-free. The groom’s mother emotionally stated that true wealth lies not in money but in a well-cultured daughter-in-law who brings families together.

A decision shaped in youth

Major Madhur Chaudhary shared that during his student days, he was deeply affected by reports of disputes and harassment linked to dowry. At that time, he made a firm decision never to accept dowry. After becoming an Army officer, he shared this decision with his family, who fully supported him.

Inspiration for society and youth

The wedding has gained attention not only locally but across the state. Major Madhur appealed to the youth to stand against social evils like dowry and contribute to positive change. This unique marriage stands as an inspiring example, showing that meaningful change begins with individual choices.
