Khaki disgraced: drunk sub-inspector drives car over barricades, clashes even with DCP; spends New Year in lockup
Lucknow (The Uttam Hindu): Amid New Year celebrations in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, an incident surfaced that brought embarrassment to the police force. At Hazratganj crossing, a sub-inspector (daroga) allegedly under the influence of alcohol clashed with on-duty police personnel. The accused drove his car onto barricades set up for traffic diversion and misbehaved with senior officers when stopped. On the orders of the DCP, the sub-inspector was arrested and spent the night in police custody.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night. Due to New Year celebrations, barricades had been installed across the city to manage traffic and crowds. When a traffic sub-inspector posted at Hazratganj asked the accused officer to take a diverted route, he reportedly lost his temper. Instead of following instructions, he tried to force his car over the barricades.
When the traffic officer attempted to stop him, the accused began arguing aggressively. As the situation escalated, DCP Traffic Kamlesh Dixit intervened at the spot. However, the sub-inspector continued arguing even with the DCP. Observing the indiscipline, the DCP reprimanded him and ordered his immediate arrest.
Police personnel then detained the accused, placed him in a police vehicle, and took him to Hazratganj police station, where he was lodged in the lockup. During the investigation, liquor bottles were recovered from his private car.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing liquor bottles inside the car and the sub-inspector arguing with fellow policemen. The accused has undergone a medical examination, and both departmental and legal action is being initiated against him. The incident has raised serious questions about discipline within the police force, especially when an officer himself attempted to breach barricades meant to maintain law and order.
