Maihar (The Uttam Hindu): A serious incident occurred during a protest by Indian National Congress workers in Maihar, where a police officer was severely injured after being caught in flames while attempting to stop the burning of an effigy. The protest was held against Kailash Vijayvargiya, the Urban Development and Housing Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

According to reports, Traffic TI Vikram Singh Pathak tried to prevent protesters from burning the effigy. During the attempt, the fire suddenly intensified, and he was engulfed in flames. Other police personnel rushed to control the situation and rescue him. He sustained serious burn injuries around his waist, back, thigh, and part of his hand. He has been admitted to the ICU of the Civil Hospital in Maihar and may be referred to a higher medical facility if required.

Fire triggered by use of petrol

The protest was reportedly organised under the leadership of district Congress president Dharmesh Ghai following a controversial remark allegedly made by Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya in the Assembly against Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar. Around 9:30 am on Friday, protesters poured petrol on the effigy and set it on fire. When the officer attempted to intervene, the flames spread rapidly due to the inflammable substance, leading to the accident.

Probe ordered and action assured

After receiving information about the incident, Maihar Collector Rani Batad and Superintendent of Police Avadhesh Pratap Singh reached the hospital to review the officer’s condition and directed doctors to provide proper treatment. The administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. Officials stated that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible. Police have registered a case based on video footage and eyewitness accounts and confirmed that those involved will not be spared.
