Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): The names for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been finalised following the municipal elections, with only formal procedures remaining. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Ritu Tawde as its candidate for the Mayor’s post, making her set to become the first BJP Mayor of Mumbai. She is expected to file her nomination shortly.

Ahead of the official announcement, BJP councillors have begun arriving at the BMC. Given the historic nature of the moment, special religious rituals were organised at the BJP office in the BMC premises, where Vedic chants were recited and conch shells were blown before the declaration of the Mayor’s name.

From the Shiv Sena side, Sanjay Ghadi will file his nomination for the post of Deputy Mayor, a position he will hold for a period of one and a quarter years.

Who is Ritu Tawde?

Ritu Tawde has been elected as a councillor from Ghatkopar for the third consecutive term. She has previously served as the Chairperson of the BMC Education Committee and is currently the Vice President of the Maharashtra BJP Mahila Morcha. Known for her strong grassroots connect and effective handling of civic issues, Tawde belongs to the Maratha community but has established a strong presence in a Gujarati-dominated ward. She joined the BJP in 2012 after leaving the Congress and has steadily strengthened her position within the party since then.
