‘Stop It Strictly…’: Five Hindus Killed in Bangladesh, India Warns Yunus Government
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Following the formation of the interim government under Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has witnessed a disturbing rise in violence against Hindu minorities. In less than a month, at least five members of the Hindu community have been killed, triggering serious concern in India.
Reports during this period have highlighted vandalism of temples, targeted attacks on Hindu homes and commercial establishments, and allegations that Hindus employed in government services are being forced to resign.
Reacting strongly, the Indian government on Friday urged the Bangladesh interim administration to take immediate and firm action to stop communal violence and ensure the safety of minorities.
MEA’s Strong Statement
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is “deeply concerned” about repeated attacks by extremist elements on minorities, including their homes and businesses. He stressed that such incidents must be dealt with strictly and without delay.
Jaiswal also expressed concern over attempts to dismiss these crimes as personal disputes, political rivalry, or external provocations, warning that such narratives embolden perpetrators and deepen fear among minority communities.
Five Killings in One Month
On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob, after which his body was reportedly hung from a tree and set on fire. At least 12 people have been arrested in the case so far.
On December 24, Amrit Mondal was allegedly killed in Pangsha sub-district of Rajbari over extortion demands. On the night of December 31, 50-year-old trader Khokon Chandra Das was attacked with sharp weapons and set on fire while returning home after closing his shop. He succumbed to his injuries on January 3.
On January 5, Rana Pratap Bairagi, resident of Narail and acting editor of Dainik BD Khabar, was shot dead in Jessore district. The same night, grocery shop owner Moni Chakraborty was hacked to death at Charsindur market in Palash sub-district.
Rising Fear Among Minorities
Since the removal of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024, multiple incidents of violence against minority communities have been reported in Bangladesh, with Hindus being the worst affected.
According to the 2022 census, Bangladesh is home to around 13.1 million Hindus, comprising approximately 7.95 percent of the country’s population. The continuing attacks have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the Hindu community.
