New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A recent report of the United Nations has raised concerns about the declining birth rate in many countries including India. According to the report, the birth rate per couple in India is now only 1.9, which is less than the replacement level of the population. Population experts believe that the replacement level of the population is 2.1, so a fertility rate of 1.9 is a worrying situation. Even though its direct impact on India's population is not visible at present, it can become a serious problem in the coming generations. The United Nations report also highlights the reasons for this decline.

This report has been prepared on the basis of a survey conducted in 14 countries of the world. In the survey, people were asked the reason for having fewer children or not having children at all. In the context of India, 13 percent of the people cited infertility or difficulty in conceiving as the reason. At the same time, 14 percent of the people mentioned medical problems related to pregnancy.

About 15 percent of people said that they were not able to become parents due to poor health or serious illness. Another major concern is the financial situation, which was expressed by 38 percent of people. They say that they do not want to expand their family due to financial limitations. They fear that if they have more children, it will be difficult to fulfill their basic needs like upbringing, education and housing. Apart from this, 22 percent of people cited housing problems and 21 percent cited lack of employment opportunities as the reason for not having children. Interestingly, in America too, 38 percent of people are hesitant to expand their family due to financial concerns.
