Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu)– Tremors were felt across several parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday afternoon after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh. The shaking was experienced around 1:22 pm in many areas of the city.

According to initial information, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres, and tremors were felt for a few seconds across Kolkata and nearby districts. The intensity in Kolkata was estimated to be around 5.0. The sudden tremors caused panic among residents, with many people stepping out of offices and residential buildings as a precautionary measure. Districts where tremors were clearly felt included South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore and West Midnapore. Residents reported brief but noticeable shaking that created fear and confusion.

During the tremors, a public event was underway where Sukanta Majumdar was addressing a gathering, and the movement was visible on cameras installed at the venue. People present at the event reacted with concern as the ground shook. Earlier this month, on February 3 at around 9:05 pm, another earthquake had shaken large parts of Kolkata for nearly 15 seconds, with initial reports suggesting the tremor originated near Myanmar.
