Gujarat family performs 'last rites' for 'lucky' car in a unique burial ceremony
Gujarat (The Uttam Hindu): In a unique and sentimental gesture, a family in Gujarat bid farewell to their 12-year-old car with a ceremonial burial. The event, held in Amreli district, cost over ₹4 lakh and was attended by nearly 1500 people, including religious figures and spiritual guides. The family chose to honor their car, a Wagon R, which they believed had brought good fortune and prosperity over the years.
Sanjay Polara, a construction entrepreneur from Surat, shared that the car had been a source of success and respect for his family. “I bought this car 12 years ago, and it brought prosperity to us. Instead of selling it, I decided to perform a tribute by giving it a samadhi at our farm,” Polara said.
The ceremony took place on the family’s agricultural land, where the car, decorated with floral garlands, was lowered into a 15-foot-deep pit. The family performed farewell rituals, draping the car in green fabric, offering rose petals, and reciting mantras as priests conducted a puja. Once the rituals were completed, the pit was filled with soil, marking the final resting place for the family’s “lucky” car.
The family’s emotional farewell was shared widely on social media, with viral visuals showcasing the car’s burial ceremony. The Polara family’s tribute is a reminder of how inanimate objects can hold great sentimental value and create lasting memories for future generations.
